Single Shield TBM

The Single Shield TBM is a type of hard rock TBMs. It utilises the disc cutters on the rotary cutter head to squeeze and shear the rock and picks up the gravel through the bucket teeth on the rotary cutter head. The gravel falls on the main machine belt conveyor and is transported backward onto the tunnel belt conveyor or the slag truck to the outside of the tunnel. The advance mode relays on the thrust cylinders pushing off against the tunnel segments installed behind the machine. The Single Shield TBM is mainly suitable for tunnelling in soft rock and rock formation that is capable of self-stabilisation. The Single Shield TBM is suitable for hard rock excavation in mountain tunnels, instead of the traditional drill and blast method. Under the same conditions, the productivity is about 4 to 10 times that of the conventional drill and blast method. Furthermore, tunnelling and lining can be proceeded at the same time.

Built specifically for Snowy 2.0 project by CREG in collaboration with the Future Generation JV, the CREC783 TBM, named Lady Eileen Hudson, was commissioned at the main access tunnel(MAT) and has already excavated 1,500m underground, making great progress. The 142m-long, 11m diameter CREG machine is initially scheduled to bore the MAT into the power station complex.
